A Filipino domestic worker has been hit with a huge bill – HK$24,000 (US$3,057) – for breaking a glass door on her employer’s balcony.
The maid identified as “A.E.”, who worked for an employer in Yau Tong in Kowloon for a month, said she accidentally locked herself out of her employer’s balcony, sunwebhk.com reported.
A.E. did not have her mobile phone with her, so she could not call for help. She said she got worried as she needed to leave and pick up her ward from school. So she broke the glass door to get back into the apartment.
The employer got angry at the maid and told her the estimated cost for repairing the balcony door was HK$52,800 (US$6,726) and she had to pay HK$24,000 for the repair.
However, a friend of the maid told A.E that her employer could not charge her HK$24,000 because under Hong Kong labor laws, an employer can only charge up to HK$300 for any damage to goods caused by a domestic worker.
Her friend advised her to seek help from a group called Mission For Migrant Workers to get more information on Hong Kong’s labor laws and her rights.
A.E may have lost her job, but it appears that legally she only has to pay HK$300 (just over US$38) to her former employer.

What happened to me is that i keft the key inside houseand my employer is in japan hahaha i follow what i saw in YouTube! I called fire station Asked them to let wt me. Borrow thier. Ladder coz we just live at 3rd floor and. Balcony open Fire department call. Locksmith but. My boss dont want locksmith to touch our lock. We . Sleep. In a. Friends. House that. Night
Decent employers should have cinsiderations.try to understand situations.consider have pity our salary to charge that amout.
One day we will all leave this types of employers…one day employers like this will do it in their own way and experience things like this.

her employer is theres no kind and consideration the hepler need to brake the glass door of course ill do the same too the boss is not thinking about her child and need to pick up from school and one more thing is what if the maid cook something how to solve the problem this kind of boss take action against the helper with out thinking its so annoying

Thats why employers should allow their helpers to bring along their mobile anywhere they go even indoors, for safety’s sake in times of emergency.
I experienced this in Beijing..i was locked at the kitchen balcony by myself..my boss said..break the side glass so that you can go out..i was not charged any cost…they are all worried for me..they might thinking that im going to jump from the window and it will cause a big problem..they said we are happy you disnt jump through out the window..hehehhe
