A female hiker was in critical condition with heat stroke after collapsing during a Hong Kong Island hike on Wednesday.

While hiking in the early afternoon with friends on the slopes of Yuk Kwai Shan on Ap Lei Chau, the 53-year-old woman became unwell after suffering heat stroke, Ming Pao Daily reported.

The temperature reached 34 degrees Celsius in Aberdeen at noon on Wednesday.

After firemen were alerted they climbed the 196-meter-high mountain and airlifted the woman to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit in critical condition.

Another woman aged around 20 reportedly suffered heat stroke while hiking with friends in southern Shek O, also on Hong Kong Island. After receiving treatment from medical personnel, she recovered without requiring admission to hospital.

Though most Hong Kong people opted for the comfort of the air-conditioned indoors, some appeared undaunted by the outdoor heat.

A group of Filipina domestic workers was spotted having a barbeque in Tai Me Tuk in the New Territories at a time when temperatures topped 37 degrees, Oriental Daily reported.

One of the workers told the reporter that she did not feel hot at all as the temperature was the same as she was used to the Philippines.

Meanwhile, parents and domestic workers are being advised to be extra careful when they take children to outdoor playgrounds.

According to Apple Daily, outdoor playground facilities can reach dangerous temperatures from exposure to the scorching sun. The surface temperature of one kids’ climbing frame in Lower Wong Tai Sin Estate reached 72.8 degrees Celsius, hot enough to inflict serious burns.
