Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., which trades as Foxconn Technology Group, a multinational electronics contract manufacturing firm known as an assembler of iPhones, intends to enter the field of chip manufacturing, The Paper reported.

According to the report, the company is evaluating a plan to build two factories for the production of 12-inch wafers, a thin slice of semiconductor material.

It is also reported that the company has restructured and established a sub-group for semiconductors, covering the manufacturing of semiconductor wafers and equipment, wafer design, software and memory devices.

However, Hon Hai has not commented on the rumour, despite the fact the company has shown interest in the sector before.

Last year, when Toshiba peddled its flash memory business, Hon Hai was actively bidding and offered the highest bid among all consortiums, though it was unsuccessful due to the intervention of the Japanese government.
