How much would it cost you if your domestic worker had a cup of coffee once in a while? Bella Yip, a Hong Kong columnist who writes for Sky Post on beauty issues, said she was puzzled when she heard an employer complain to friends in a restaurant that she was unhappy because she had spent around HK$5,000 (US$635) on coffee that her domestic worker had consumed during her employment, thinking the maid did not deserve having that much money spent on her.
But the maid in question had been working for that employer for 10 years.
Yip said she was not surprised that some people in Hong Kong with this kind of mentality – some people are mean, they are ungenerous, and they count every single cent they spend on other people, whether a domestic worker, a colleague or even a family member.
But Yip said she believed that if only you are nice to others, then most people will be nice to you in return.
Your domestic worker is the one who takes care of your children, keeps your house clean and tidies when you are busy at work, so she deserves to be treated well.
If a couple of bucks spent on coffee could make them feel good and full of energy, why does the employer need to be so stingy?
To give is always better than to take – it’s the win-win situation of a mutual relationship.
Yip advised employers not to expect domestic workers to treat them well unless they evaluate themselves to see whether they are generous enough to their maids.

Exactly ????????????
Life is just a give and take relationship but it is more bless on giving with out any in return.instead count our blessings rather than complaining.many employer are KURIPOT!!! We even spent our foods to eat good ???????????? But We’ll pray for them.
I was sitting at KFC mongkok when i saw kabayan with her employers (whole family) feeding kids but not eating and in low energy.. me and my sissy give corn and egg tart coz its easier for kabayan to eat while she was feeding the kids but the kids grab it from her OMG… we (2 person) order bucket… while them 5person ONE SET MEAL
WELL SAID ,????FOR THAT,,,COFFEE GAVE US STRENGTH
Very true, many employers are "mean", they dont give enough "food" for helpers, if they are four in the family, when she come home from the grocery store and then then she put out thier food she always say cook this for the "four" of us, you cook rice for "four", so the maid is not included in the budget..and when you steam fish and you put it whole on the table they eat it all not thinking the maid and worst when she said we only want to eat vegetable salad so you dont need to cook rice tonight, so the helper dont have food for herself…and we only eat our stored biscuits or bread that comes from our own money…we wish, may they will give us the food allowance…please philippine consulate…and the labor laws in hongkong,,, give the helpers our rights to containue serving you good…..we love hongkong may we also be given love the equal for as human

It sadden me reading such mean behavior of an employer towards her domestic helper. But some employers are good, considerate to their helper well being too!
I am one of those helper very lucky enough to have one of the best employer there is in Hong-Kong. For more than 28 years of service my employer haven’t shown me any meanness at all!
To my boss Ms. Patricia Wong Pui Han and family my deep appreciation and gratitude.
Why employer needs to hire a helper while they cant afford to give a cup of coffee? While helper can do alots of things like..preparing n cooking employers family foods, feeding and caring their kids, etc etc while just how much a cup of coffee? Employers better dont hire a helper…do all the householdchores and treat urself a coffee in the starbucks…hehehe!
