How much would it cost you if your domestic worker had a cup of coffee once in a while? Bella Yip, a Hong Kong columnist who writes for Sky Post on beauty issues, said she was puzzled when she heard an employer complain to friends in a restaurant that she was unhappy because she had spent around HK$5,000 (US$635) on coffee that her domestic worker had consumed during her employment, thinking the maid did not deserve having that much money spent on her.
But the maid in question had been working for that employer for 10 years.
Yip said she was not surprised that some people in Hong Kong with this kind of mentality – some people are mean, they are ungenerous, and they count every single cent they spend on other people, whether a domestic worker, a colleague or even a family member.
But Yip said she believed that if only you are nice to others, then most people will be nice to you in return.
Your domestic worker is the one who takes care of your children, keeps your house clean and tidies when you are busy at work, so she deserves to be treated well.
If a couple of bucks spent on coffee could make them feel good and full of energy, why does the employer need to be so stingy?
To give is always better than to take – it’s the win-win situation of a mutual relationship.
Yip advised employers not to expect domestic workers to treat them well unless they evaluate themselves to see whether they are generous enough to their maids.

The employer dont deserve to have a helper
Correct! 100% true!
this is so real.. if all employers nice to their helpers expect that helpers will love you more ????????????
To those employer who are ungenerous. .shame on you!
We are helper yes! But try to visit out home..your living room is equivalent to our bedroom..some employers think that we are that poor! Pls open ur mind and be nice.
yes,,that’s the kind of my employers now.
I spent my own money to buy my coffee, snacks, and toiletries.
3 in 1 coffee cost only 25$ for 30pcs already.it sounds cheap for those who have high salary.
Sometimes it’s funny to think that my boss ask me to buy her Starbucks Coffee that cost 48$ in jst one big size of mug but can’t even share with me 1packet of coffee hahaha
But I believed in God so I jst leave it all to Him 🙂
Filipinos drink coffee while Chinese drink tea…there is the health benefits of drinking real coffee and also tea.
Dear employers, if you can’t offer anything free to your maid give them food allowance. Do not give if it doesn’t come from your heart. Do not bring your maids to restaurant if you don’t buy food for her.
Employers, remember maids work from their hearts and with their hearts ,BUT if you treat us like rags, the curse from hell will follow you and you will never have peace in your life.
Yes…you must.love your maid, so that she will love you too.
Very well said Miss Yip,,,☺????????????
I have experience with my ex employer not more food allowed breakfast and lunch they don’t give me Im so sad if remember all those make me unfair only dinners 1 bowl rice and little vegetable I always use own money for coffee and others food (my ex employer also eat and the kid always ask me the biscuits and chocolates for me is really shameful for them they are boss still ask snack for the maid )but i dont minds that during my day off i bought to many food thanks God I’m until 2year Finnish my contract now i got very nice new employer all for is free we not stingy events we are maid right
Ur one of a kind boss…God bless u????????????
Exactly!
Wow!what a nice words towards helpers Miss Bella Yip.If only all employers have the same attitude like yours, then hk is a place of love and harmony.

Agree,,,Bec.some are really counting what they give to there helper,,So Sad,,!!
maybe its better for the employer to recieve the amount of $4310 to take good care of their family..only then they can understand the word generous….even me im not that lucky on my contract all is checked like providing the helper food, toilereties and etc but when i arrived all those thing didnt follow…even if they are aware of their duties. i even got mean wordd from my employer because of a $10 coffee…what a shame…
Don’t buy la!!!!
Don’t bring your maid la!!!
Better don’t have maid la!!!
IT’S MORE SHAMEFUL TO SEE EMPLOYERS WITH THEIR MAIDS AT THE RESTAURANT JUST SITTING AND WAITING FOR THE EMPLOYERS TO FINISH EATING AND MORE SHAMEFUL EITHER THAT THEIR FEEDING YOUR KIDS AND THEY’RE NOT EATING AND WORST GIVING THEM THE LEFTOVERS AFTER ALL OF YOU EAT
