A husband and wife were found dead in the bedroom of their apartment in the New Territories on Thursday in what police believe was a suicide pact tied to financial problems after their business failed.
The 42-year-old man and his 39-year-old wife lived with their 16-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter in an apartment in Block 5 of private residential housing La Grove in Yuen Long’s Shap Pat Heung in the New Territories, the Apple Daily reported.
Police were told that on Wednesday night, the mother gave a plastic bag to the daughter and told her that if anything happened in the family, she should open the bag and ask for assistance from relatives and friends.
The daughter took the bag and returned to her room.
On Thursday morning the children went to school as usual and returned home in the afternoon. They found their parents’ room locked, but did not suspect anything.
By 8pm, the son became concerned and called police after he found his parents’ room still locked and tried calling them but had no answer. Firemen arrived and broke into the room where the bodies of the couple were discovered. A bowl of burned charcoal and a suicide note were found.
After an initial investigation, police believe the couple committed suicide due to financial problems after recently closing their frozen meat business.
