The Philippine government has apologized to the Kuwaiti government after the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait rescued domestic workers from their employers’ homes.
On Tuesday, foreign secretary Alan Peter Cayetano spoke to local reporters about the rescue efforts of distressed maids by the Philippine embassy in Kuwait, GMA News reported.
“I apologize to my counterpart, we apologize to the Kuwaiti government, Kuwaiti people and leaders of Kuwait if they were offended by some actions taken by the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait,” Cayetano said.
Cayetano said the rescue efforts were carried out to protect Filipinos working in Kuwait. “We are apologizing for certain incidents that the Kuwaitis view as a violation of their sovereignty. But we explained to them that these acts, we felt, were necessary in saving and protecting Filipino lives,” he said.
On Sunday morning, two Filipinos were arrested for helping domestic workers run away from their employers. The Kuwaiti government called the rescue efforts ‘inappropriate behavior’ and a violation of the country’s sovereignty.
