A domestic worker who suffered severe burns in Saudi Arabia when her employer poured boiling water on her in 2014 is returning home to the Philippines.
In 2014, Pahima Alagasi, who was 22 at the time, suffered second-degree burns after her employer poured boiling water on her back because she had accidentally dropped the lid of a thermos while preparing coffee, The Filipino Times reported.
Alagasi was unable to seek medical treatment for her wounds until three hours after the incident. She fled from her employer and went to the Raseel Medical Center in Riyadh for treatment. She then sought help from the Philippine Embassy.
Alagasi filed a complaint against her employer, but the case was dismissed. Her employer then filed slander charges against Alagasi over pictures of her injuries posted on social media. The employer also filed a legal case accusing her of absconding.
Alagasi was not able return to the Philippines right away because of the legal complaints filed against her. However, after an appeal to the Saudi royal family by the Philippines, the cases were resolved and Alagasi now is able to leave the country.
