The Hong Kong Police Force raised the terror threat level in the city as Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte prepared to fly to Hong Kong on Tuesday.

After his arrival late on Tuesday, Duterte was to go to the InterContinental Hong Kong in Kowloon’s Tsim Sha Tsui area, where he will stay with his wife Honeylet Avancena and their daughter Kitty Veronica, Sing Tao Daily quoted sources as saying.

Duterte is scheduled to meet around 2,000 people from the local Filipino community at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Thursday, but he will not meet with any Hong Kong government officials during his three-day visit.

Hong Kong police are stepping up security, deploying counterterrorism, G4 VIP Protection units and a search unit during his stay.

A police source said the threat level against the president himself was relatively high, so the Hong Kong force was mounting a higher-than-normal security operation to ensure his safety, but added that the general terror level in Hong Kong was rated as moderate.

This will be Duterte’s second visit to Hong Kong since he was elected president in 2016. His first was in May last year.
