A 39-year-old Filipina was fined US$5,000 by the Magistrate’s Court in Brunei last Thursday after pleading guilty to taking part in an illegal lottery this month.

Citizens reported that suspicious illegal gambling happened at a rented room in Kampong Pancha Delima in Berakas, north Brunei, the Borneo Bulletin Online reported.

On April 11, officers from the Anti-Vice and Gambling Suppression Unit and the break-in and theft unit at the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) staged a joint raid on the apartment and found a customer buying a four-digit (4D) lottery ticket.

Defendant Zenaida Abdu Gustaham was acting as a collector at the scene. She admitted to police that she started the illegal gambling site early this month.

She pleaded guilty on Thursday to violating Section 4 of the Common Gambling Houses Act and was fined US$5,000.

She will face five months in jail if she fails to pay the fine.
