Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has given airline tickets to a Filipina maid in Hong Kong so she can return home to see her sick son and to watch two of her children graduate from college.

The offer came when Duterte and his family paid an unscheduled visit to a fast-food branch of a Filipino franchise in Kowloon’s Whampoa on Thursday afternoon. Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Cayetano live-streamed the visit on his Facebook page.

Filipina domestic worker Alma Pardillo was invited to Duterte’s table and told the president about her sick son, over a box of fried chicken.

According to the Presidential Communications department, Duterte granted Pardillo roundtrip tickets to the Philippines to check on her son, who has a serious lung ailment, and to celebrate the college graduation of two other children.

About 100 Filipinos gathered outside the fast food outlet, trying to get a photo of the president. Many domestic workers said they were happy to see the president in Hong Kong, news website HK01.com reported.

After his meal at the Jollibee outlet, Duterte went to a meeting with the Filipino community at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.
