A couple was rushed to hospital on Sunday with serious injuries after a lift accident in Tsuen Wan in the New Territories.
A man surnamed Ho and his wife surnamed Man, both 32, were trapped in the lift at Block 2 of Waterside Plaza in Tsuen Wan. The lift hurtled to the top of the building without stopping, Apple Daily reported.
The couple, who live on the 15th floor, entered the lift at about 5pm along with another passenger.
The passenger got out on a lower floor but the lift failed to stop on the 15th floor. Instead, it reportedly ascended quickly to the 46th floor – the top of the building – in about 40 seconds.
Ho injured his head and his wife was suspected to have fractured bones in her neck. They were rescued by firefighters and sent to hospital but are now in a critical condition in an intensive-care unit.
Engineers from the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department inspected the lift after the accident and said the lift’s cable was intact. They are now investigating why it failed to stop when it should have.
Operation of the lift was suspended until results of the investigation are known.
A similar accident happened in a lift in Block 1 in the same residential estate in 2014 when technicians conducted an inspection, but no one was hurt, Oriental Daily reported.
