A pro-North Korean newspaper in Japan, in a possible diplomatic signal, said on Thursday that the US should create the right conditions if it wants talks with Pyongyang.

Choson Sinbo added that North Korea never begged for dialogue with the US, according to a report by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency. The paper, also known as The People’s Korea, is read by some members of Japan’s ethnic Korean community.

The published comments follow recent speculation that Washington and Pyongyang may agree to talks after a senior North Korean official, Kim Yong-chol, told South Korean officials that the North is willing to have discussions with the US side.

US President Donald Trump reportedly said in late February that talks with North Korea are possible only under the right conditions.

“If talks are possible only under the right conditions just as Trump said, the US should create those conditions,” Choson Sinbo said in its article.

The newspaper also accused the US of misleading the international community by saying the North is begging for talks because it is giving in to sanctions and pressure.

“The reality is completely different,” the paper said. “Trump should explore ways to hold talks with North Korea if he wants to avoid armed conflicts with the nuclear-armed North.”
