A metal container believed to have been too heavy for the crane that was trying to lift it fell from the 22nd floor of a shopping mall in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island early on Wednesday.
At 1am, a maintenance crew at Lee Theatre Plaza on Percival Street tried to use the crane on the 22nd floor to lift the container, which was 2.4 meters long and 1.7 meters wide, but it suddenly fell to the ground, Apple Daily reported.
It damaged part of the overhead cable of a tramway, and the crane tilted on its side and smashed the building’s glass ceiling.
No one was hurt during the accident but glass debris was scattered over the sidewalk.
Hong Kong Tramways suspended its service to Happy Valley at 6am and resumed the service at 10pm after repairs.
Hysan Development, Lee Theatre Plaza’s developer, said the procedure had been conducted in compliance with safety guidelines, and the area had been sealed off during the operation.
