Mother with baby loses foot when hit by car on sidewalk

A 36-year-old mother carrying her two-year-old daughter had a foot severed and suffered other serious injuries when she was hit by a car in Tsuen Wan in the New Territories on Monday morning.

Her daughter was not injured in the accident, which happened at a mini-bus stop on Lei Shu Road. A luxury car mounted the sidewalk and knocked her down as she held her child, the Oriental Daily reported.

The woman’s two legs became wedged between the car and a power distribution box. Her left foot was severed and she suffered serious injuries to her right leg.

However, her first thoughts were for her child, and as she lay trapped, she asked pedestrians: “My foot is gone, please help check and see if my daughter is doing alright.” She also asked a passerby to call her family.

The two-year-old girl was unhurt and was cared for by the woman’s relatives, who quickly arrived at the scene.

The woman was sent to the Princess Margaret Hospital with the severed foot, but after a nine-hour operation, the left foot could not be reattached. She also had many fractures in her right foot and it had to be partially removed. She remained in a serious condition.

Police arrested a 28-year-old man who is a property agent and charged him with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. He was released on bail and has to report back to police next month, Sing Pao reported.
