A Filipino domestic worker in Hong Kong was given a two-month jail term for using her expired work contract and work visa to get a loan.
On March 1 at the Sha Tin Magistrates’ Court, Marites F Olarte, 42, was sentenced after pleading guilty to obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception, sunwebhk.com, a news portal for Filipinos in Hong Kong, reported on Monday.
On November 4, 2017, Olarte was fired by her employer Wong Chin-wang, which made her work contract and work visa invalid. Two days later, Olarte borrowed HK$40,100 (US$5,110) from a lending company after presented her expired contract and visa.
Olarte was to repay the loan in 17 months through monthly installments of HK$3,121. She paid the first installment, but then she stopped paying. Her outstanding debt rose to HK$49,936.
The lender learned from Olarte’s employer and the Immigration Department that she had left Hong Kong on November 11 after being fired.
On February 11, Olarte was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport when she arrived from the Philippines. She was supposed to start working for her new employer the next day.
The court sentenced Olarte to two months in jail after she pleaded guilty to the charge.
