A Filipino-American actress will perform her one-woman play about her Filipino gangster grandmother in the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from March 22 to 24.

Sara Porkalob will perform her play Dragon Lady, which is about her grandmother who was a gangster who migrated to the United States, Sampan reported.

Porkalob started developing and performing the play when she was a student in Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. It was originally seven minutes long but has been expanded to two hours as she continues to develop the storyline.

Dragon Lady is the story of Parkalob’s grandmother who immigrated to the United Stated and overcame child trafficking, sexual exploitation and gangster feuds to bring her children to the US.

Porkalob said in an interview that the play was a tribute to her grandmother.

“She thinks that she’s accomplished nothing, but what she has done with her life is these incredible, hard, difficult and joyous things, and we as her family are going to take that as part of our integral identity,” Porkalob said.
