China on Friday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, terming it a “positive” message and a step in the right direction, says a report by Yonhap news service.

“We welcome the positive message that North Korea and the US sent out on their direct dialogue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang reportedly said in a regular press briefing.

Beijing’s spokesman added that efforts on the North Korean nuclear issue continue to move in the right direction and expressed support for the relevant nations to focus on resolving it through dialogue and cooperation.

China’s upbeat response follows Trump’s acceptance late Thursday of a surprise invitation from Kim to hold a summit as soon as possible. The meeting is expected to take place by May.

South Korea’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, delivered the invitation to Trump during a Thursday briefing at the White House on the outcome of his trip to Pyongyang earlier this week as President Moon Jae-in’s special envoy.
