A domestic worker was taken to a police station for further investigation on Sunday after being suspected of theft from her employer at a home in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island.
At 12:12pm, police received a report that the resident of an apartment in Fontana Garden on Ka Ling Path had discovered that a batch of red envelopes known as lai sees had gone missing, Oriental Daily reported.
The employer suspected that the maid had taken the red packets, and called the police.
The report did not disclose how many red packets were missing.
Police classified the case as theft and detained the maid for further investigation.
Lai sees are gifts presented at social and family gatherings such as weddings or on holidays such as the Lunar New Year, which was this past weekend. The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is a symbol to ward off evil spirits.
Red envelopes are usually given out by married couples to single people, regardless of age, or by older to younger ones during holidays and festivals.

Detain even without evidence? What if it is not proven? Can the police detain the employer for wrong accusation? How can you cure the trauma of the helper?

What if na – missed place lang?police kaagad…hindi muna nag hanap. ..or baka na ipamigay na…grabe katulong kaagad ang suspect….luckily my boss were not like them…when I was only a year here on my second employer…she lost her diamond ring…she called from her office asking me to see if it’s here at home…so I search and search from every corner where she always put it…but to no avail…we can’t find it….even though my conscience is clear…I can’t help but worry coz I am the only one left at home always….but she came back and tell me never mind…maybe I drop it on my way to my office…I talk to her heart to heart and say part that I am so worried that you will suspect me….but no….she even said that woman’s finger is smaller in the morning…that’s why I thank God for having a good and generous employer. ….sorry haba ng comments ko…I’m proud to say that I have a very kind employer….so sa’yo kabayan. ..don’t worry as long as you know that you’re not guilty of what your employer had accused you…the truth will set you free….God bless you
