While everyone in Hong Kong was wrapping themselves in layers of clothing and donning coats during the recent cold snap, an 11-year-old girl was spotted wearing nothing but her school uniform and a thin sweater on Monday morning, when the temperature in the urban area was only 8 degrees Celsius.

Teachers at Po Yan Oblate Primary School in Kowloon’s Wong Tai Sin area saw the girl, a Primary 4 student, was not wearing a coat when she arrived at school in the morning. She was shivering when she entered the campus, with cold hands and a running nose, am730 reported.

The girl also told teachers that she had to shower in cold water even in the cold weather.

The school found more clothes for her, and gave her hot meals to keep her warm. Staff also tried to contact the girl’s parents but failed. They decided to report the case to the police, as they suspected the girl had been abused.

The girl was later sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a medical checkup.

In the evening, police arrested her 40-year-old mother and 35-year-old father for alleged child abuse.

It is understood that the girl’s case has been followed up by the school social worker.

The girl lived in a subdivided apartment with her parents and a younger sister in Sham Shui Po, Apple Daily reported.

It was understood that she was born with cleft lip, and she had told others that her parents did not like her when her younger sister was born.

Her younger sister, who is a Primary 3 student at the same school, has been warmly dressed in recent days.
