The Philippine government’s decision to ban Filipinos being sent to work in Kuwait has spurred a lot of debate about the problems of workers being abused while overseas.
In a commentary published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, columnist Walter Paul Komarnicki said prospective employers should be checked before foreign workers are sent to work for them.
Before workers are deployed, they must go through several processes and submit paperwork to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration in order to be allowed to work abroad.
However, Komarnicki said employers should be screened before they can hire an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW).
He said too many OFWs – who are mostly young women – were abused by their employers after they start work.
“It is bad enough that poor Filipinos, desperate to get out of poverty, have to work like slaves for a pittance overseas, but to suffer torture, rape and death is beyond relief,” Komarnicki said.
Filipino workers should be empowered to screen and interview their potential employers – not the government – so that they can decide whether to work for them or not.
“It can be done, it must be done. The days of sadistic, abusive and murderous employers of our long suffering heroic OFWs must stop,” he said.
It should be have interview between the employer and employee.. so that they can talk and we know if we can do the situation in their house
please add more staffs para marami ang magmonitor sa mga OFW at mabilis ang pag tulong sa mga nangangailangan ng rescue or assistance..isa rin po akong OFW..
I agree i already experience that kind of situation…the arrangement is just between the ageny & employer…
But the problem here in kuwait they will hired a maid and they give them to their relatives. Like what happened me here I work in the sister in law of my sponsor.. And at the same time I worked in the house of my sponsor f they needed me.
