A 59-year-old woman was charged in Malaysia on Wednesday with the murder of her 26-year-old Indonesian maid, while the 32-year-old daughter of the accused was charged with illegal employment of the victim, and the alleged murderer’s son, 39, agreed to be a witness for the prosecution.
M A S Ambika was arrested one day after her domestic worker, Adelina Lisao, died in a Penang hospital of multiple organ failure allegedly caused by physical abuse, Sin Chew Daily (Malaysia) reported.
Ambika’s daughter, R Jayavartiny was also charged in the same court with employing Lisao without valid documentation between March 2017 and February 10 this year, in violation of Malaysia’s Immigration Act.
Ambika did not record any plea and was not represented by a lawyer, but her daughter pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail of 15,000 ringgit (US$3,830).
The son, meanwhile, was released by police and will appear as a prosecution witness.
The case has been set for mention on April 19, pending further forensic and chemical reports.
Lisao was allegedly a victim of abuse by Ambika’s family as she was seen by neighbors sleeping outdoors on the porch of a semi-detached house beside a Rottweiler for more than a month despite harsh weather.
