An eight-year-old schoolgirl who got fishball caught in her throat during recess at her school in Yuen Long a month ago has died in hospital.

The girl surnamed Chow, a primary 3 student at Buddhist Chan Wing Kan Memorial School, died on Monday after spending 26 days in Tuen Mun Hospital, Apple Daily reported.

Chow’s father said the doctor revealed that his daughter had suffered cerebral hypoxia – a reduced supply of oxygen to her brain – for 22 minutes after choking on the cuttlefish ball and collapsing in the school playground.

Police will conduct an autopsy to further investigate the actual cause of death.

Chow bought the cuttlefish ball during a break at school on January 18. It was understood that the girl tried to swallow the snack quickly as the bell had rung to signal the end of recess, but the fishball got lodged in her throat.
