The Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong has warned Filipino domestic workers to be vigilant against recruiters tempting them with ‘better-paying’ jobs in countries such as Turkey and Russia.
On Friday, the Consulate posted on Facebook that it had received information about some domestic workers who are having difficulties in those countries. It said the workers had been promised better – and permanent – jobs, but soon found themselves being transferred to different employers.
On the same day, Jalilo dela Torre, head of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Hong Kong, posted a notice on Facebook warning Filipinos of a new human trafficking recruitment drive, with workers being lured to Turkey.
Dela Torre warned his compatriots signing up would do his compatriots more harm than good.
Last November, the Hong Kong police raided three employment agencies in Tsim Sha Tsui, Wan Chai and Kennedy Town for trafficking Filipino domestic workers to Russia and Turkey.
