A Filipina domestic worker in Hong Kong owes a financing company HK$40,000 (US$5,115) after she took out the money at the behest of a swindling boyfriend.

Raquel, 53, worked for an employer in Pok Fu Lam, on Hong Kong Island, for six years. Sunwebhk.com, a news portal for Filipinos in Hong Kong, reports that she is a widow and has four sons in the Philippines. She was looking for a romantic relationship and met a man. Little did she know that he was out to take advantage of her for money.

After taking out the loan, she gave the money to her boyfriend. She thought she would be able to pay the loan off from her salary. However, her employer terminated her contract and she was forced to return to the Philippines.

After finding a new employer, Raquel was able to return to Hong Kong last month. She has reached an agreement with the financing company to settle the debt.

Raquel’s friend, Jasmin, counseled her to prioritize her work and forget about any man who wanted to use her for money.
