A Filipino teacher was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl in Siem Reap, Cambodia. On Monday, John Steven Balbin, 27, from San Fernando in the Philippines, was arrested on suspicion of digital penetration and allegedly made a confession, The Phnom Penh Post reported.

Balbin was charged with one count of committing an indecent act against a minor under the age of 15.

Police did not disclose the name of the school but said it was an educational facility for children between the ages of five and 15.

James McCabe of Cambodia’s Child Protection Unit urged schools to be vigilant to protect children from abuse. “It is necessary for all educational institutions to ensure when they employ foreigners that they demand a police clearance for working with children,” he said.

In Cambodia, the maximum penalty for committing an indecent act against a minor is three years in jail and a fine of 6 million riel (US$1,500).
