About 1,300 people were evacuated from an area in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island while police bomb-disposal experts worked for 26 hours to make a World War II bomb safe.
The bomb, which weighed around 1,000 pounds or 450 kilograms, was discovered by workers on Saturday morning at the Shatin to Central rail link construction site on Convention Avenue in Wan Chai, Oriental Daily reported.
Given that parts of the bomb were damaged and it contained about 500lb of explosives, about 20 bomb disposal officers were needed for an overnight operation to dismantle the bomb at the scene.
By 1pm on Sunday, the disposal experts had successfully dismantled the bomb.
More than 1,300 people were evacuated from buildings within a 400m radius of the site, including tourists staying at the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel facing the construction site.
Roads around the area were closed but returned to normal on Sunday afternoon.
The bomb, which was 145 centimeters long and 45cm in diameter, was believed to be a US-made ANM-65 device dropped between 1941 and 1945 during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.
It is the second-largest bomb found in Hong Kong, according to local records. A similar one was unearthed in a Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island in 2014, Apple Daily reported.
