Police are looking for burglars after an attempted break-in failed at a luxury villa in Mid-levels on Hong Kong Island on Monday, while a separate break-in on Lantau Island saw many valuables stolen.
A domestic worker found a window in a room on the second floor of a 4,200-square-feet villa on Plantation Road in Mid-Levels broken and informed the employer, Simon Cheng, chairman of Toy State International Ltd, Oriental Daily reported.
Police arrived and searched the hillside behind the house but no one was arrested.
Officers believe a burglar sneaked into the villa at night and cut open the wire screen, then covered the surveillance camera with a glove before planning to prise open the window to break into the house, but was unable to do that. No losses were reported.
Police at Central District are following up on the matter.
Meanwhile, a 52-year-old man of American origin reported to police at 3am that his village house on South Lantau Road on Lantau Island had suffered a break-in.
He lost watches, jewelry and cash worth around HK$52,800 (US$6,755).
