A 34-year-old mother was arrested by police for alleged abuse of her two children after a teacher discovered bruises on them on Tuesday.

Police received a report from Canossa Primary School in Wong Tai Sin in Kowloon that a teacher found one of her students, a six-year-old boy, had bruises on his face and nose, Sing Pao reported.

The teacher then spoke to his nine-year-old sister, who is studying in the same school, to try to find out the reason, then saw bruises on the girl’s thighs and left hand.

The children told the teacher they had been hit by their parents because they were slow in finishing their homework.

After an initial investigation, police classed the case as child abuse and arrested the mother that night for alleged ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person.

Both children were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical examination.
