A 60-year-old man was found dead on Wisdom Path in the Ngong Ping highlands on Lantau Island on Monday. The deceased, a retired engineer surnamed Wong, had told his family that he was going hiking alone on Shek Pik Country Trail on Sunday, Headline Daily reported.
However, when he failed to return home by late Sunday and did not answer his mobile phone, Wong’s family reported him missing to the police.
At 10am on Monday, police located Wong’s phone on Shek Pik Country Trail through the Global Positioning System (GPS). An hour later, a foreign hiker passed by Wisdom Path and spotted a man lying motionless on the ground, and called the police.
Together with firemen and Civil Aid Service personnel, police officers found Wong’s body on the trail, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A trekking pole and a backpack with his personal belongings, including his wallet and identity card, were found nearby.
It was understood that Wong suffered from hypertension and heart disease.
Police do not suspect foul play at this time but the actual cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.
