A 46-year-old employer of Chinese origin in Malaysia appears to be fighting a second battle with an employment agency which he hired to find him a new Filipina maid. He has turned to police for a second time after needing their help previously to get his former maid’s passport.
In mid-March 2016, the employer surnamed Siow, an information technician living in Taman Bukit Indah, appointed an employment agency in Kuala Lumpur to apply for a new Filipina domestic worker so his maid, whose contract was due to end in May that year, could return home to the Philippines on schedule, China Press reported.
Siow spoke at a press meeting arranged by Community Policing Johor on Monday, saying he had paid 8,000 ringgits (US$1,970) as the middleman fee to the agency, and submitted the passport of his maid at that time for the paperwork required.
Shortly after he was told the agency could not arrange a maid due to problems with their business partners in the Philippines. Siow was then guaranteed a full refund.
Approaching the date when his maid’s contract was due to end, a month after his initial application, Siow could not secure his maid’s passport as the agency “kept giving him excuses”.
By May 19, 2016, the employer eventually got the passport back – with help from Malaysian police – so that the Filipina could return home on June 10 in the same year.
Yet, as of Monday, Siow said he had not yet received the full refund he had been promised. At present, he is being assisted by the Community Policing Johor in the bid to get his money back.
