A Filipina writer has told of how her income has multiplied since she quit her job in the Philippines and moved to Dubai. She says she now earns PHP82,000 (US$1,598) per month.

Jamila Millar Velasco, who moved to Dubai in August 2014, told Khaleej Times her previous salary working as a researcher for a government-run, quasi-military school in the Philippines was between PHP8,000 and PHP10,000 a month.

“I researched, edited post-grad thesis papers, co-authored a textbook, co-edited a manual, and only earned PHP8,000 to PHP10,000 a month,” she said.

Velasco says she found a job after two months when she moved to Dubai. She now works as an intelligence researcher and earns 6,000 dirhams, which is around PHP82,000.

“I write security alerts [for] high-impact incidents like air strikes, armed clashes, targeted killings and maritime attacks for our clients in […] the Middle East, Asia and Africa,” she said.
