The new Philippines Consul General in Hong Kong, Antonio A. Morales, has said he will tackle the growing problem of Filipinos being illegally recruited to work as domestic workers in Russia.
There are currently 5,000 Filipinos working illegally in that country and most of them were hired in Hong Kong, according to the Philippines embassy in Moscow.
Mr Morales, who replaced Bernardita L. Catalla as consul general on January 6, also said he will work with authorities to create caregiver positions for Filipino overseas workers, sunwebhk.com reported. This would be a new job category for the overseas workers.
He said such employment would be an opportunity to upgrade the skills of domestic workers.
The Indonesian government has also discussed the possibility of opening caregiver positions for its overseas workers with the Hong Kong government.
