A 31-year-old woman was arrested in the Mong Kok area of Hong Kong’s Kowloon district on Thursday for alleged child neglect.

HK01.com reports that a social worker went to a subdivided flat on Nam Tau Street, in Mong Kok, to check on two children – an eight-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy, both surnamed Chan. The girl had been absent from school since January 1 and the boy absent from kindergarten since December 7.

The children’s mother, surnamed Ko, refused to open the door to the social worker, who called the police. When they arrived at the 150-square-feet flat, Ko opened the door voluntarily. However, the officers found the living environment undesirable.

Sing Pao Daily reports that they found excrement and urine stains, and waste paper, on the floor. It was unclear whether the waste was human or from a mongrel also found in the flat. Officers also found the boy was naked.

No injuries were found on either the mother or the two children but they were sent to hospital for examination.

It is understood the children’s father left the family two years ago and that they have suffered financial hardship as a result.

This was the fourth case reported to police of suspected child abuse or child neglect in a week.
