About 1,000 undocumented Filipinos in Kuwait took advantage of an amnesty on Monday, the first day it was made available. The Kuwaiti government announced on January 23 that there would be an amnesty period from January 29 to February 22 for people who are in the country illegally, Arab Times reported.

On Monday, about 1,000 people queued up at the Philippine Embassy to secure their travel documents. The embassy advised those with valid passports to go to the airport directly and leave the country right away to avoid penalties, Kuwait Times reported.

However, people who have cases filed against them are not permitted to leave Kuwait.

The embassy urged all undocumented Filipinos to avail themselves of the amnesty and return home to avoid paying fines. It also said those who want to stay in Kuwait should comply with the necessary residence-visa procedures.

According to the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior, there are about 10,000 undocumented Filipinos in the country.
