A 43-year-old man was sentenced to 20 months in jail at Hong Kong District Court on Tuesday after being convicted of seven offenses including dangerous driving causing the death of an Indonesian domestic worker.

Lau Wai-ting pleaded guilty to causing the death of the maid in an accident that occurred while he was driving a minibus in Kowloon City in March last year, Oriental Daily reported.

In April this year, police discovered that Lau had stolen a minibus that he had rented three times and driven to earn money.

When Lau was intercepted by police officers, he was found with illegal drugs in his possession.

District Court Judge Stanley Chan severely reprimanded Lau for disregarding people’s lives and doing damage to the domestic worker’s family, Sing Pao reported.

Besides dangerous driving causing death, Lau was accused of taking a conveyance without authority, possession of illegal drugs, using a defective vehicle, and other charges.

He was sentenced to 20 months in jail, a fine of HK$2,000 (US$55), and a five-year suspension of his driver’s license.
