A 28-year-old man was jailed for 10 months by a Singapore Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to molesting two women – a 30-year-old foreign maid and a 27-year-old housewife – in lifts in separate incidents on August 16 this year.
Defendant Manikam Sandar, a guest service executive, followed a maid from Myanmar into a lift at around 2:20pm in a residential building in Clementi in Singapore, The Straits Times reported.
When the doors of the lift closed, Sandar started touching the maid, who screamed, crouched down in fear and struggled. The man urged her not to shout but continued touching her.
He touched her again as she got out of the lift on the fourth floor.
A second incident involving Sandar occurred about 30 minutes later, when he followed a 27-year-old housewife into a lift in a residential building on West Coast Road and molested her as the lift went up.
This woman told him that she was pregnant, which prompted Sandar to stop, slap his forehead – then step out of the lift at the ninth floor and run down a staircase to flee.
Both women reported these incidents to the police and his actions were also captured on closed-circuit television cameras.
By 7pm on the same day, police had found and arrested Sandar. He told the officers he had drunk five cans of beer before molesting the two women.
According to local laws, offenders could face up to two years in jail, plus a fine or the cane for each count of outrage of modesty. Sandar was found guilty on two counts.
