An 80-year-old man was able to escape – thanks to help from his domestic worker – from his home in Bukit Timah, Singaporeafter a fire broke out on Monday.
The fire – the cause of which is still under investigation – started on the second floor of the terrace house on Jalan Jambu Ayer at about 1.10pm, Lianhe Wanbao (Singapore) reported.
A 50-year-old neighbor told the reporter the blaze went up so strongly and quickly that clouds of black smoke came out of the windows. Fortunately, the old tenant and his maid had got out on their own.
The pair were seen standing in the street nervously watching firemen trying to contain the blaze.
Firefighters were able to put the blaze out shortly after they arrived. The unit was badly burned and had a big hole in the roof. The lawn also suffered severe burn marks.
The landlord said the old man and his maid were unharmed. They were able to stay temporarily with a relative until the house is declared safe and has been repaired.
What we know:
where the fire happened;
the man was 80 years old;
he has a domestic worker.
What we don’t know:
the man’s name;
more importantly because she was the rescuer, the domestic worker’s name and her age;
the name of the landlord who told the reporter the story.

Naehm Oiracan Hi, I wrote a response to your comment earlier but somehow it didn’t appear here. So here it is again: Thank you for taking time to respond to my comment. I admire what you did. The man whom you call grandfather is a lucky man indeed for having you by his side when he needed it most. (And he is 93 years old, not 80 as reported in the news?)

Chaiw Hin Wah There’s a thing called the principle of news writing. It may be summarized as "5W and 1H" — who, what, where, when, why and how. This is basic information that a piece of news should contain to provide readers basic understanding. There are cases where withholding some of this info is necessary to ensure safety or protect privacy of interested persons. This particular story is not such a case. In fact, it should reveal who rescued the old man so that her deed can be publicly acknowledged.
