An Indonesian helper was sentenced to 14 months in jail after being convicted of child abuse at Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Aminah Siti, 44, was arrested in July after her employer’s two-month-old baby boy was diagnosed with intracranial bleeding, caused by violent shaking by the maid.

The presiding magistrate stressed the seriousnesses of the injury caused to the infant, rebutting a plea from the defense lawyer that Siti had been with the family for three years and taken good care of the baby’s elder brother and that she had no intention to abuse the child, Apple Daily reported.

The baby liked to cry, so the maid shook him in a bid to soothe him in an apartment at Waldorf Garden in Tuen Mun, the court was told.

The magistrate said the maid had the responsibly to take good care of the baby, especially when his parents were not at home and that a 14-month custodial term was appropriate given the gravity of the offense.

The maid called her employer on July 2 to say that the baby wouldn’t stop crying. The infant was found in a semi-coma and rushed to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with bleeding of the brain and convulsion. The maid was subsequently arrested by the police.
