A Filipino man was stabbed in a street in Hong Kong’s Hung Hom district on Monday morning, apparently after getting involved in a row over money with a gang of four of his compatriots.
Having sustained serious stab wounds to his face and back, the man, a 49-year-old asylum seeker allowed to remain temporarily in Hong Kong under a recognizance certificate, was taken to hospital after being attacked in Baker Street at around 3am.
The man might have been in a life-threatening condition had it not been for his girlfriend, who pleaded with passers-by to call the police, Oriental Daily News reported.
The four attackers were believed to have been Filipinos as well and might have had a financial dispute with the victim. They chased him in the street until hearing the police sirens.
The police were hunting for the attackers, but no arrests have been reported.
Around the same time as the altercation involving the Filipinos, a separate scuffle broke out in a park in Hong Kong’s Kwai Chung area, where a heavily built man started assaulting three others after he felt they were leering at him impolitely, Oriental Daily News reported.
The attacker ran away before police arrived. One of the injured was also said to be an asylum seeker, this one from India, according to a police briefing.
