A 39-year-old Filipina woman who has served a Singapore family for more than eight years has been thankful for their love, support and generosity.
Lea Calambro was hired in 2009 by her employer surnamed Lee to help him and his wife take care of three children – a daughter then six, plus a son and daughter who were twins then aged four, Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore) reported.
From the beginning Calambro was treated like a member of the family. The wife and the maid would go together to get a massage every two months and the maid has been given a debit card so that she can shop for the family easily. And whenever the family goes on vacation, their Filipino maid comes along.
In 2013, after four years of work in Singapore, Calambro made her first trip home. The Lee couple decided to go with her, so they could meet their maid’s parents.
The Lees realized it was natural for parents to worry about their children when they are away from home. So, it was with Lea. “We thought if they could meet us in person, that could [help] make them less worried,” the 48-year-old female employer said.
The meeting went well. Calambro’s parents were happy and the Lee couple were flattered by the warm welcome they got from Lea’s village.
Two years earlier, the Lee couple learnt that the maid’s village in the Philippine suffered a drought, so they sent some food for relief. They also sent stationery and other supplies to reward students who did well at school.
With the three Lee children growing up with Calambro, they sometimes reveal their private thoughts to the maid instead of their mother, but their mum says she is not jealous – just grateful to have such a devoted and caring helper.

Anne Sambo : we once had a maid and she has been with us for 24 yrs. She’s frm Indonesia. When she first came, she was asked to look after my younger sister’s baby girl. When she grown up, she was passed over to my third sister, looking after her newborn baby girl and she sticked to them until she got another two more babies after that. To cut short, the youngest baby has turned 11 yrs old, when she left the family. Throughout the years with us, we never considered her just as a maid. She is just part of our family members. When she left, my third sister, the one she last worked with, became very ill. ( before that, she was quite sick ) Two years later my sister passed away of cancer. Living 5 children aged 20, 18, 16, 14, 11. The three youngest one are very attached wt the maid. Now…she did pop up once a while ( 3 -4x a year) and put in at her old employers house. She is always welcome. She can stay as long as she wants. She’s already a family to us.
Same as me I work hard for the money ived got every month without special treatment. 16yrs working with one family. But still thankful for what I have..
I work for 27 years and I never get a special treatment. I was treated and thought to be grateful for what they give me! And I am paid to do the work! And I should compare myself lucky.
