Guangdong province plans to levy an environmental protection tax following the submission of a Proposal on Applicable Tax for Air and Water Pollutants to the provincial People’s Congress Standing Committee, the Southern Metropolitan Daily reported.

The government plans to charge for air pollutants at a rate of 1.8 yuan per pollution equivalent, while the charge for water pollutants will be 2.8 yuan per pollution equivalent.

The tax collection will start from January 1, 2018, the report said.

The amount of the tax will be adjusted by the provincial government within the prescribed range.

After the environment protection tax is levied, there will no longer be sewage charges.
