Employers of foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong are planning to organize a petition and a demonstration to oppose the lifting of the “live-in” rule for maids.
Joan Tsui, convenor of the Support Group for HK Employers with Foreign Domestic Helpers, said most employers worried that workers would become lazy or could not perform well if they live separately, Headline Daily reported.
Working parents who greatly depend on maids to take care of their children in the morning worried the most if the maid would be late for work, she said.
Some employers also worried that their workers would want to do another part-time job illegally after work.
Tsui believed that if the “live-in” requirement was cancelled, domestic workers who live out for a long period of time in Hong Kong would have solid evidence for them to apply for permanent residency.
Tsui predicted that at least 100,000 of the 350,000 maids in the city would choose to live separately, and there was the risk of large-scale redundancies happening if the choices between employer and maid were different.
The live-in rule was introduced in 2003 and implemented via standard employment contracts and pledges when workers apply for visas.
The Hong Kong High Court heard in October a judicial review filed by a Filipino domestic worker against the “live-in” rule, alleging that it forces the workers to be on call 24 hours a day and puts them in a risk of being abused.
Barrister Albert Luk Wai-hung said the ruling on the judicial review would have a great impact on society. He predicted that the side that loses the case will appeal, which means it may not be settled for two to three years.

M Janice Yatar Garvin bkit nman cla isip resedenCy Kalukuhan yon. .we only need live out.for privacy. ..
i think its still ok to. Be a live in but the goverment must make a rule to have certain time of rest of the helper .example 9pm helper must take a rest if wmployer didnt follow tbey pay penalty
most stay in helpers suffer from selfish employers, that you cant even cook your own food cause they complain that it smells, you cant even have a full 1 hour lunch break, you need to start up early in the morning and finish late.sometimes they even have to call you in the middle of the night just to open the door even if they have keys.on holiday they will text you asking shits and the following day the kitchen looks like a warzone, they cant even put the dishes inside the dishwasher, they will wait for you to do that! and my friend driver,if he is not driving, his employer will look for something for him to do. i have a nice room, privacy and no curfew but will really complain bout the working hours and cooking my own food.i feel sad for my fellow dh that have this kind of experience, too.THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HELPER AND A ROBOT!
But most of the helpers here having no privacy for short no room the helper sleep with the rubbish bin vacuum cleaner all clothes for the employer laundry basket what can you say by that?but we have no complain but hope employers also be considerate how if youre on our situation
ridiculuous!how can we work part time?if we are so tired, you people only cares about yourself. we understand that employers here are also working thats why they hired maids to look after they kids, but the point is you guys to need to rest after work right? we us also.
Big TRUE.. Kahit pag uwi mo minsan galing sa day off parang tinamaan ng IPO IPO ang kusina. Then its really difficult if you don’t have privacy.
Ang tsekwa abusado my amo n sagad kon paguwi m day off gagawin m lahat ng kalat utos dito wantosawa kauutos hayys
Very true employer ko nga kahit asa off ka tawag ka at pauwiin which is d ko nman tinotolerate bahala xa
Yes me too pero nakaka awa ang mga kapwa natin na walang sariling room or privacy..
True
Most employers prefer live in helper, they depend too much to their helper…which is not right…a helper is to help not to shoulder all the work at home especially if there’s a baby…and one thing more, employers should pay the helper if they require to babysit…because they also paid in their work if they do over time
why would they be concerned sbout helpers hsving part-time? thats the duty of the gov’t to look into. Just be honest, if you treat helpers well with dignity and respect, what else would they ask for?
M Janice Yatar Garvin correct!
Oh come on hk employers(mostly),say what you’re afraid of.your worries are far from what is real.
The fact is that u are worried because no one will peel an orange for you at midnight,no one will serve you even drinking water, you are worried because you migjt die without a helper for few hours…
Please do not fool yourselves by saying helpers might be late or lazy,if you open your eyes and mind you will realize that it is you(most employers) are the ones that are lazy.some cant even wake up in the morning by themselves because they r behaving like a queen haha
If thwy cannot trust their helpers can show up on time. How can they trust them to take care of their kids ? Their reasons are just ridiculous.
I prefer live-out so that we can take more rest, unlike if you are live in you will stay awake until midnight, besides most of the employers are dependent to the helper
Admit it or not..mostly live in helpers is being abused..no bedroom..no privacy..luck of food ang long working time..even during holidays they expect their maids to tidy up everything even during holidays..if maid complain..termination will be the next issue..in didnt say that all employers are mean and abussive but accept the reality..most employers are abusing the sense of having a live helper..
