An Indian woman was found dead on the staircase in a two-story home in Kuala Lumpur after a blaze broke out early on Saturday. Four other members of her family and their domestic helper were also injured.

The fire reportedly broke out at 4:12am in the detached house on Lorong Maarof in Bangsar, in the Malaysian capital, China Press reported on Monday.

The deceased was believed to be the first person to discover the blaze. It is suspected that the woman slumped into a coma on the staircase while going to alert her husband in the master bedroom on the first floor about the fire.

Five other people – the dead woman’s sister, husband, son, daughter and maid, whose nationality was not known – were found trapped and suffering from inhaling smoke. All were rushed to the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for emergency treatment.

Three remained in a critical condition, while two had been transferred to a general ward.

Fire investigators said the blaze started in the living room on the ground floor and burnt down 40% of the unit. They are continuing to investigate the actual cause.
