A 31-year-old Filipino domestic worker was injured after being attacked by a burglar she surprised in a flat on Prince’s Terrace in the Mid-levels on Hong Kong Island on Saturday.

The maid, named Miranda, heard a strange sound at about 4am and went to check things in the living room – only to find a man dressed in black standing in front of the kitchen in the Nikken Heights flat, Sing Tao Daily reported.

The burglar grabbed a bottle and hit the maid on the head before she yelled for help. Frightened and with her head injured, she rushed back to her room and locked the door while the burglar fled.

The maid was reportedly so shaken by the drama, it took her until about 9am – when her employer’s father surnamed Liu woke up and found a mobile phone worth about HK$1,400 (US$179) was missing – that she was able to tell him about her encounter with the burglar.

She was sent to a private clinic to get medical treatment for the injury to her head.

Miranda was understood to be working for Liu’s daughter-in-law, whose family lives nearby. She sometimes stays in Liu’s flat on Prince’s Terrace overnight, Oriental Daily reported.

The family reported the case to police at 4pm. Officers from the criminal squad at Central Police District are investigating footage from surveillance cameras.

The burglar was believed to have climbed up a water pipe and got into the kitchen, as it had no bars or grille on the window.
