A 37-year-old Filipino woman has been arrested for alleged child neglect after leaving her baby boy on a street in Wan Chai late last week.

Two passers-by went to police at 6pm on Friday to say a baby was found on the pavement at 280 Queen’s Road East in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island, Sing Pao reported.

Police went to the scene and found the baby – a one-year-old boy, who was conscious. They sent him to Ruttonjee Hospital for a check-up.

The boy’s Filipina mother, named Labador Angelita Sunga, was found by the passers-by shortly after, allegedly hiding a short distance away, and arrested by police at the scene.

The mother was understood to be living in Wan Chai and unemployed, according to a police source, who added that she was allegedly involved in a child abuse case six months ago.

This incident is the second case of a child being abandoned in the city in just a week.

On October 18, a 22-year-old woman from Zambia was arrested and later charged with one count of infanticide after she abandoned her newborn baby girl on Wan Chai Road. The baby was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
