Police are investigating the death of a 34-year-old man who had been arrested for wielding a meat cleaver on a busy street in Kowloon’s Yau Ma Tei area on Wednesday.
At 8pm, the man surnamed Chan wielded the cleaver at the intersection of Nathan Road and Gascoigne Road, Apple Daily reported.
He disrupted traffic and used the cleaver to hit a taxi, followed by a 24-seat van and a bus, before falling to the ground.
Chan then dropped the cleaver by a building, and then inflicted some damage on a grocery store. An off-duty police officer subdued him with the help of the store owner and a passer-by before handing him over to on-duty officers.
But Chan collapsed after his arrest and was later pronounced dead in Kwong Wah Hospital.
Police said no medicine was found on Chan and there were no visible injuries on his body.
It was understood that Chan, a drug abuser, had triad background but no criminal record, a police source was quoted as saying by Sing Pao.
