The Hong Kong Government is to launch an experimental scheme to provide 300 domestic workers already in Hong Kong with nursing skills to better meet the needs of elderly people in their care.
The 18-month trial scheme, co-organized by the Social Welfare Department and the Department of Health, will be launched in the first quarter of next year, Apple Daily reports.
The move is among the policies to tackle the problem of an aging population in Hong Kong announced by chief executive Carrie Lam Cheng-Yuet-ngor in her maiden Policy Address on Wednesday.
Consisting of an 11-hour training course, the scheme targets maids who are already in Hong Kong and involved in home-based elderly care.
The maids will learn practical skills relating to feeding, lifting and positioning elderly persons, and will also cover first aid, mental health and other areas.
To allow the maids attend the course, their elderly employers will be taken care of in elderly centers nearby, Radio Television Hong Kong reported.
Hong Kong’s elderly population is expected to increase from 1.16 million in 2016 to 2.37 million in 20 years, data from the Census and Statistics Department shows.
