A preliminary police investigation into a young Vietnamese woman’s fatal fall from a multi-story monorail station in Kuala Lumpur has found that her death was an accident.

The woman, in her 20s, was initially reported to have jumped from the third floor of Jalan Imbi monorail station at 1.20pm on Sunday, China Press reported.

There were claims on social media that the woman, who was sitting by a railing, fell because she was too absorbed while reading on her mobile phone.

But footage from a closed-circuit television camera and witness reports suggested otherwise – the woman was seen to have lost her balance, bumping into the railings and falling from the building, Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sukri Kaman said.

None of her belongings, such as her handbag, mobile phone, passport and other valuables, was missing. That suggested her death was more likely to have been an accident than to have involved a criminal element.

No other sign of foul play had been found so far, the police chief said, as the victim had her clothes intact, and she was not on medication at the time of the incident.
