Abu Ismail, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, was shot dead in an encounter with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Nowgam area on Thursday, according to media reports. Ismail was the alleged mastermind of the attack on Amarnath yatris earlier this year that killed seven people.

Times of India quoted a police officer as saying, “LeT terrorist Abu Ismail of Pakistan along with his accomplice killed in Nowgam. Huge achievement for police and [security forces].”

The security agencies launched a manhunt for Ismail soon after the attack on pilgrims on July 11. Kashmir Director General of Police SP Vaid told News18, “Ismal was involved in the attack on the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims. The attack has been avenged.”
